Department of Civil Engineering
The oldest and most sought after all engineering branch in the world, Civil Engineering involves designing and managing a number of construction projects. A civil engineer can be involved in creating everything from a small bridge to a lavish residential complex. Broader in nature, Civil Engineers specializes into a variety of area viz. transportation, infrastructure, water resources, urban design, coastal areas and the environment. Roorkee is the city which is engaged in civil engineering education since last 150 years. Roorkee finds its importance by being the host of many prominent institutions and organizations. So studying civil engineering at Roorkee is like studying from its creators.
At RCE, Roorkee, The goal of department is to produce high quality technical manpower needed by industry, R&D organizations, and academic institutions and above all to meet the engineering needs of the nation.
The Department also encourages its students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, essential for development, nurturing of team spirit, developing organizational skills and inculcating good moral values and positive work culture.
Any candidate with a degree in Civil Engineering can be appointed as Assistant Manager, Senior Engineer, Project Manager, Director of Public Works, Researchers, City Engineer, Deputy Engineer and Independent Consultants. These roles can be performed within the technical specialty branches of Civil Engineering like Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, Ocean and Coastal Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Urban Engineering.
Advance Registration for admission in B. Tech courses has begun for the students who have appeared in the qualifying examination i.e. 10 +2 in the current year or passed earlier & will appear in AIEEE/JEE in the current year. The admission shall begin as soon as the result of 10+2 is announced by the CBSE / ICSE / Uttarakhand Board / Any other equivalent board.
Advance Registration for admission in Diploma courses has begun for the students who have appeared in the qualifying examination i.e. 10 or 10 +2 in the current year. The admission shall begin as soon as the result of 10 or 10+2 is announced by the CBSE / ICSE / Uttarakhand Board / Any other equivalent board.
Fluid Mechanics Lab
A basic knowledge of Fluid mechanics is essential for all the civil engineers as they frequently come across a variety of problems involving flow of fluids, force of fluid on structural surfaces etc. This laboratory is used for experimentation on the properties and behavior of fluids.
Building Material Lab
The Building Material Lab is equipped with experimental setup required for study of properties of various building materials.
The survey lab is used for surveying exercises and is equipped with all latest instrumentation viz levels, total stations, and GPS receivers sets for conducting ground surveying works.
Building Planning and Drawing Lab
Building planning and drawing lab in civil engineering is used for make the plan of any building, structure, etc. The various plan model of this lab are generally Study model of two story building, Study model of bifurcated stair, Study model of open well stair, Study model of flush door, Study model of racking shore, model of ventilated door, Study model of laced & bracing, Study model of shahs door, Study model of fully panel door.
Hydraulics & Hydraulics Machines Lab
The hydraulics laboratory is fully equipped with all the facilities and experimental setup through which students are given a very good demonstration to understand various methods of measurement of flow rates, capacity & velocity of water in tanks, closed pipes and open channels.
Advance Survey Lab
The Advance Survey lab is used for surveying exercises and is equipped with all latest instrumentation viz levels, total stations, and GPS receivers sets for conducting ground surveying works.
The Geology lab is used for experiments related to crystallography and mineralogy. State-of-the-art facilities are also available for experiments on structural geology.
Concrete is the most widely used construction material. The concrete laboratory tests every component in the concrete mix design as well as the concrete mix itself. The lab provides evaluation of the plastic properties of the mix as well as the hardened properties.
Structure Analysis Lab
The Structural Analysis Lab facilitates in the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components. Results of the analysis are used to verify a structure’s fitness for use.
Soil Mechanics Lab
The soil lab provides academic and research services through performing all lab tests needed for analysis and study of soil characteristics and its properties.
The Environmental Lab comprises of modern and technically advanced instruments needed for water and wastewater analyses. The lab has also many in-situ devices and equipment to perform different types of measurements and to take grab and composite water, wastewater samples.
Transportation lab consists of equipment used in the testing of bituminous materials such as viscosity, ductility and plasticity and other devices for super-pave testing of bitumen and aggregates. There are other devices for mix design by both Superpave and Marshall Methods.
CAD Lab – I
The CAD Lab – I is equipped with AutoCAD software and is extensively used for design and drawing. The knowledge gained in the lab eventually equips the students to provide quality service once employed in the industry.
CAD Lab – II
The CAD Lab – II is equipped with AutoCAD software and is extensively used for design and drawing. The knowledge gained in the lab eventually equips the students to provide quality service once employed in the industry.
Many software programs are available for each discipline of civil engineering. Most civil engineers practice in specialized subsets of civil engineering, such as geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering, project and construction management and land surveying.
This virtual lab provides remote-access to various Labs in Civil Engineering and would cater to students at the undergraduate level, post graduate level as well as to research scholars. This lab would help them in learning basic and advanced concepts through remote experimentation. This lab shares costly equipment and resources, which are otherwise available to limited number of users due to constraints on time and geographical distances.
Labs which are ready for use are: Soil Mechanics Lab, Basic Structural Analysis Lab, Virtual Smart Structures and Dynamics Lab, Strength of Materials and Fluid Mechanics Lab, Surveying Lab.
